Step #2: Prepare the Plywood Base

Once you have the dimensions figured out, cut a piece of plywood to fit inside the frame. This will serve as the base for your wood block mosaic. Paint the plywood black to ensure any gaps or imperfections in the blocks are hidden.

Step #4: Prepare and Sand the Boards

Gather your 1” x 6” x 8” boards. Keep 2 of the boards at the ¾" thickness. Cut the remaining boards to the thickness of ½" and ¼". Since the boards are 6" deep, and our blade height is just over 3", you will need to pass the boards through the table saw twice to make your cuts.

Tip: You should have multiple boards of varying thicknesses to create a unique texture.

Step #5: Cut Boards to Varying Lengths

Tip: Before cutting the boards to varying lengths, use a palm sander to sand the face and 2 sides of all boards. Cut the boards to the pre-determined lengths to fit inside your frame (5 ½", 8" and 11"), and manually sand the rough-cut edges of each block.

Step #6: Create the Mosaic Pattern

Now the fun part! Begin laying out your mosaic pattern on the plywood base within the frame. Mix lengths and thicknesses randomly, and periodically step back to ensure the design remains varied and visually appealing.

Step07

Step #7: Secure the Blocks

Once you're satisfied with the pattern, carefully remove each block and apply construction adhesive to the back. Press each block firmly back into place on the plywood base, ensuring good contact. Continue to glue each piece in place.

Step #8: Finishing Touches

Once all the pieces are secured let the glue cure before staining. Refer to the construction adhesive recommendations for curing time.
